The best time to visit Rwanda

Rwanda's equatorial highland climate is mild year-round, which means there isn't a bad time to visit — but the right season for you depends on what you're prioritizing.

The two dry seasons

Rwanda has two dry periods: the long dry season from roughly June to September, and a shorter one from December to February. These months bring the firmest hiking trails, the clearest long-distance views from volcano summits, and the most reliable conditions for gorilla and golden monkey trekking, which is why they’re also the busiest and most expensive months to book.

The rainy seasons

The rains fall in two windows too: a longer stretch from March to May, and a shorter one from October to November. Rainfall tends to arrive in afternoon downpours rather than washing out entire days, so travel is very much still possible — trails are muddier and some rural roads slow down, but landscapes turn a deep green and lodges are noticeably quieter and often cheaper.

Matching season to activity

  • Gorilla and golden monkey trekking: best in the dry months for easier footing, though treks run all year
  • Akagera safari and game drives: dry season concentrates wildlife around water sources, making sightings easier
  • Birdwatching: the wetter months bring migratory species and lush cover, appealing to birders specifically
  • Lake Kivu and relaxed travel: pleasant nearly year-round, with the dry season offering the most reliable lake-day weather

Temperature and altitude

Because most of Rwanda sits at elevation, temperatures stay moderate year-round — warm days and cool evenings are the norm even in the dry season, and it can get genuinely cold at higher altitudes like Volcanoes National Park, so pack layers regardless of when you travel.

Our take: If gorilla trekking is your priority and you can be flexible on cost, aim for June–September or December–February. If you'd rather trade slightly muddier trails for quieter parks and lower rates, the shoulder months are an excellent compromise.
